Travel Time 02:30
Travel Time Babe, if I could travel time, I know that I could make you mine I’d break you, I’d break you, uh-huh I’d whisper something in your ear that you’d record but wouldn’t hear Yeah, it’d take you a long time to hear But, maybe in a year or two, you’d play it back and then you’d know who you were made for and, baby, he’d know it too There’s always too fine a line between the helpful and the selfish kind of people, uh-huh But this girl wanted to break my heart just to prove that she was smart, oh man, there’s reasons for reasons like hers Though not compared with space and time, the trick she played was so very fine: she made me see double the woman in half the time
2.
Graveyard Crown The money’s directed by those on high, maybe they don’t know where it’s supposed to go cuz it seems to ebb when it needs to flow and they don’t see the sound - they’re wearing that graveyard crown and it fits too well. They want us to build up a barrier between the verb and the noun, they want us to whisper into those walls until our voices can make no sound. But one thing they don’t know about you and I, baby, we’re always walking in one straight line so, if you move, I’ll hear just fine. No, they can’t see the sound - they’re wearing that graveyard crown and their future is under the ground. You always said that life is a way to lay down and now you love your pity
3.
Honey Sacrifice Sacrifice your honey to the god that hides his sweetest face and waits for lonely people’s paws full of thorns and carefully declawed So they never can hide with the sun in their face Whatever happened to the noon-day sun? Whatever happened to the noon-day sun and why is everybody singing backwards? They’re singin’: ‘La-la La-la-da-da-da’ Sacrifice your candy to the cause that flies the cleanest flag and waits for lonely people Gives every lonely person a law and provides every thirsty person with a straw
4.
We’ll Create The Warmth I’ve seen the future - know you’re waiting for your possible daylight Always thinking, Somewhere out there, lies your possible heartache – here And I know that you’re unsure, but I can’t spend my nights at your door Peeking through the keyholes to see which lover offered you more I followed you down, only cuz I thought you’d follow me back up here We’ve all accepted what can’t be given, as if a grave were some kind of gift for the living – here And you know, I can’t always make it so the other guy looks like he’s weak The commitment I make is to something bigger than I can teach I’ve seen the future, know you’re waiting somewhere out there, hesitating, little children grapes for crushing all you want is more than nothing the light we capture the noise we call our own through stormy weather we’ll create the warmth for your possible daylight
5.
(The) Silver Sound Silver road is your own way to go The Silver Sound makes it so much faster to get where you’re going The other sounds are wasting your time Because they never bring the reason to rhyme Walk alone if your heart is too full The space between your lips is a black hole And the words that you think, that you know, They work just like a ghost in your brain and you say “I know what I mean, I just can’t explain” The Silver Sound destroys the verb and noun that brings us down Your tongue is just a flag that makes you gag If you can’t stand the sun in your face, The Silver Sound is a shady place With the light that we capture at dawn We’ll wake up every shadow and ghost And throw away the candy nobody chose The Silver Sound creates a destiny that keeps it free From every yes and no that makes you slow Silver road is your own way to go: the Silver Sound makers Walk alone if you think they’re too slow: 7 out of 9 are fakers

Pealing The Azure Bell/Filling The Body Cavities I know the shore isn’t sure of tomorrow but the waves keep coming to ‘now’ Knowing we end, we become a beginning on our way to a promising view Unless you know the boat is already leaking, why not set sail for the ocean so wide? Unless you know the boat is so close to sinking there’s no hole, it’s a matter of time Even though day can ignore what it’s breaking, every night it’s reminded again Those that die, well, they count you among them even though you’re not very old Unless you know the boat is already leaking, why not move on past the strength of the tide? Oh my precious time, I let my ashes fall on you on this sacred night and leave the crumbs of youth behind
7.
(Bells) Ring Out The News And when the bells ring out the news, you may feel sick, you may feel used - they’re always donating you And when you can’t hear anymore, then you will know what time is for - it’s only awaiting on you I know the bells have let you down Remember, the bell is not the sound It’s only awaiting you Do you not know that we shall judge angels when they are too slow and the earth may shrivel so that heaven may grow And then the sound will ring from you Walking the path just like you do And then the sound will ring from you This is a prayer from you to you: I was done hating You Do you not know that we shall judge angels? Corinthians said so And the earth may shrivel so that heaven may grow

No Matter What You Do (lyrics by Arthur Lee) Do you remember me I'm the one you talk about Do you remember me I'm the one you booted out No matter what in the world you do Hey, I'll always be in love with you No matter what in the world you say Girl, I'm gonna love you anyway Do you remember when You said that I was your true love And you'd take care of me And watch me like the stars above No matter what in the world you do Hey, I'll always be in love with you No matter what in the world you say Girl, I'm gonna love you anyway I just gotta hear you play it one time for everybody now! No matter what in the world you do Hey, I'll always be in love with you No matter what in the world you say Girl, I'm gonna love you anyway I just gotta hear you play it one time for the world now! No matter what in the world you do Hey, I'll always be in love with you No matter what in the world you say Girl, I'm gonna love you anyway I said I'm gonna love you anyway You know I'm gonna love you anyway

about

"The true symbol should be understood as an expression of an intuitive idea that cannot yet be formulated in any better way. When Plato, for instance, puts the whole problem of the theory of knowledge in his parable of the cave, or when Christ expresses the idea of the Kingdom of Heaven in parables, these are genuine and true symbols, that is, attempts to express something for which no verbal concept yet exists" - C.G. Jung

Three years ago I began lending greater credence to a group cf images and phrases I had been passively receiving from myself for some time. The most dominant motif in this symbolism was the contrast between silver and gold which became the aesthetic cornerstone for a set of songs and, eventually (an unusually long 'eventually'), this album.
I wrote most of the songs in May of 1998 at Broughty Ferry, Scotland. In August of the same year, I came to Indiana where the Secretly Canadians introduced me to Jeb Banner, LonPaul Ellrich, and Greg Backus. With Jeb I discussed my desire to record an album that 'sounded like silver'. To my surprise, he not only understood the sound I was striving for, but was extremely sympathetic to the over-all spirit of such an enterprise.
Dan Burton was gracious enough to provide us with his digital 8-track and Jeb, LonPaul, Greg and I recorded the basic tracks in one afternoon. Moving to the dank cellar of what was then Secretly Canadian headquarters, Jeb and I spent the following days in sleep-deprived delirium recording more tracks, searching for the formula for the sound we heard in our heads. Accustomed to the 'warmer' sound of analog 4-tracks and limited by low-quality microphones, the final result could not have been called bronze, much less silver. We considered the project a failure and I returned home to Fargo, North Dakota somewhat dismayed.
Although one song ("Silver Sound*) was mixed and released on Horror Vacui the following year, the remaining songs drifted from memory until summer 2000 when Jim Zespy and I resurrected the neglected session. Guided by the same desire to approximate a silver sound, we added more tracks, dulcified the originals, and produced a final mix of which this is an authentic copy. The one song included here not sharing this geneology is "(Bells) Ring Out The News; which was recorded entirely in the summer of the year 2000 by Jim and I.
These songs, (with the exception of Ring Out The News), were written at a time when I believed spiritual questions to be behind me. (The 'Silver Sound', as it originally struck me, was conceived solely as an 'anti
political' album.) It was only through the process of writing and recording Horror Vacui (eight months later) that I realized the importance of the symbols in drawing my attention away from the purely intellectual drive to
understand God toward the cultivation of a will and desire to stand under God.
Although I refrained from analyzing the imagery of these songs, preferring to let it speak for itself, I nevertheless intuited silver to be more valuable than gold since silver was "your own way to go" i.e. the path to self-knowledge (silver road). Gold, on the contrary, was (like the sun) illuminating though potentially blinding. The people with "the sun in their face" are like those who attempt to look into the face of God and are made blind.
Recently, I have discovered striking similarities between the silver sound imagery and the texts of medieval alchemists, at least some of whom understood themselves to be exploring the spirit. C.G. Jung described the dominant theme of alchemical systems: "Mercurius possessed a double nature, being a chthonic god of revelation and also the spirit of quicksilver. As the planet Mercury, he is nearest to the sun, hence he is preeminently related to gold. But, as quicksilver, he dissolves the gold and extinguishes its sunlike brilliance...It was probably owing to its all too obvious analogy with the sun that gold was denied the highest philosophical honor, which fell instead to the lapis philosophorum. The transformer is above the transformed, and transformation is one of the magical properties of the marvelous stone. The Rosarium philosophorum says: "For our stone, namely the living western quicksiver which has placed itself above the gold and vanquished it, is that which kills and quickens.""
While these symbols may appear esoteric, I believe they are in no way mystical or merely subjective. Rather they are attempts to name something in experience for which words do not do justice. "True symbols" are like subtle timbres resonating across centuries of time inside all who listen to themselves carefully and with wonder. All who feel a heart in their chests and learn to praise any drop of blood courageous enough to pass through a narrow ventricle into the life it both creates and leaves behind. We all die, what a pity we do not all live first. I praise the blood that dies so that we may live. It is my Lord.
